At MRI, we believe successful Mpingo restoration begins long before a seedling is planted in the landscape. We are strengthening the entire restoration chain—from quality seed and capable nurseries to knowledge, research, partnerships and ultimately successful landscape establishment.
Our philosophy is simple: restore the capacity to grow Mpingo first, and restoration of the landscape will follow.

We support the identification, collection, documentation and availability of quality Mpingo seed while promoting better seed processing, handling and storage practices.
Result:
More than 10 kg of certified Mpingo seed has been distributed to selected nursery operators, helping establish a more reliable supply of planting material for restoration.

We strengthen local nursery enterprises by connecting growers with quality seed, technical guidance and, where resources permit, nursery materials needed to produce healthy Mpingo seedlings.
Result:
More than 20 nurseries across Kenya are now actively producing Mpingo seedlings, forming the backbone of a growing national restoration supply chain.

We share practical, science-based knowledge on seed handling, germination, nursery establishment, seedling care, out-planting and long-term stewardship through training, field engagement and knowledge-sharing platforms.
Result:
Technical knowledge is reaching growers and restoration practitioners through conferences, professional meetings, social platforms, the Growers Network and direct engagement—strengthening the skills and confidence needed to grow Mpingo successfully.

We encourage research and practical experimentation to improve understanding of Mpingo seed, propagation, nursery management, growth, silviculture, genetics and restoration performance.Result: Early propagation trials at the Nairobi Arboretum demonstrated that Mpingo can be successfully raised when appropriate seed-handling and nursery practices are applied. Three KEFRI research stations—Marigat, Lodwar and Lamu—have also initiated Mpingo seedling production under different ecological conditions.

We bring together government institutions, research organizations, universities, nursery operators, conservation organizations, communities and individual restoration champions around a shared national restoration goal.Result: A growing national network has emerged around Mpingo restoration, including more than 20 participating nurseries, the Mpingo Seedling Growers WhatsApp Network, institutional collaborators and restoration practitioners working across Kenya
