The Mpingo Restoration initiative (MRI) is a partnership of diverse interests including private, public, and non-governmental organizations as well as individuals who recognize the importance of the Mpingo tree for it’s ecologic, economic, and cultural values, who are working together to restore the species to the appropriate Kenyan landscapes. Because the species has been over-exploited, and regeneration is challenged, it is considered “near-threatened,” and it’s future on Kenya’s savannas, and in it’s forests, is in peril. Restoration efforts are merited.
