The Mpingo Restoration Initiative (MRI) is a voluntary collaborative movement bringing together individuals and institutions committed to the long-term restoration of Kenya's African Blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon).
MRI emerged from a shared concern that, despite the ecological, cultural and economic importance of Mpingo, the species remained largely absent from nursery production and restoration programmes. The challenge was not simply awareness, but limited access to quality seed, propagation knowledge, nursery experience and coordinated opportunities for people to contribute.
Rather than establishing another conventional organization, MRI provides a platform through which different sectors can contribute their expertise, resources and experience toward a common restoration goal.

From a Simple Question to a National Movement
MRI began with a simple question: “If everyone agrees that Mpingo is disappearing, why are so few people growing it?”

MRI began with a simple question: “If everyone agrees that Mpingo is disappearing, why are so few people growing it?”
The question brought together foresters, researchers, nursery operators, conservationists, musicians, students and other practitioners who recognized the need to move from concern to practical action.
The initiative took an important step forward at the Forestry Society of Kenya Annual Conference in Kisumu in September 2025, where the idea of a collaborative Mpingo restoration movement was presented to the wider forestry community. The response demonstrated a strong willingness to collaborate and helped transform an initial conversation into a growing national network.
Today, MRI continues to grow as a network connecting people and institutions working to strengthen Kenya's capacity to conserve and restore Mpingo.
