The Mpingo Restoration Initiative (MRI) began with a simple question: If everyone agrees that Mpingo needs to be restored, why are so few people growing it?
The question sparked conversations among foresters, researchers, conservationists, nursery operators, students, musicians and other people who shared a concern for the future of Mpingo in Kenya. These conversations revealed a clear gap—not in interest, but in the opportunity for people to contribute, access quality seed, share practical knowledge and work together.
MRI emerged from this realization in 2023 as a voluntary, collaborative movement rather than another formal institution. Its foundation was built on the belief that restoration begins by empowering people to grow, conserve and champion Mpingo.
The movement gained wider professional attention through its engagement with the Forestry Society of Kenya Annual Conference in Kisumu in 2025, where the idea of a coordinated national Mpingo restoration effort was presented to foresters, researchers, students, conservation organizations and other stakeholders. The response demonstrated that there was a strong appetite for collaboration and practical action.
From there, MRI grew from a small group of passionate individuals into an expanding national network.
Today, MRI provides a platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, networking and collective action.
MRI is still writing its story. What started with a question has grown into a movement—and the next chapter will be shaped by everyone who chooses to be part of it.

Mpingo (Dalbergia melanoxylon), internationally known as African Blackwood, is one of Africa's remarkable indigenous trees adapted to dryland regions in Kenya nand East Africa.
It contributes to biodiversity, soil improvement and dryland ecosystem resilience while supporting cultural traditions, livelihoods and an internationally important timber value chain.
Its exceptionally dense and durable wood is valued for fine carvings, luxury products and world-class musical instruments, including clarinets, oboes, recorders and bagpipes.
Yet Mpingo faces a serious conservation challenge. It is a slow-growing species that can take decades—around 60 years—to reach maturity, while decades of overharvesting, habitat degradation and poor natural regeneration have placed wild populations under increasing pressure. This is why MRI is committed to restoring Mpingo: to help rebuild populations of a species that takes generations to mature but can be lost within a fraction of that time.

MRI takes a whole-system approach to Mpingo restoration, strengthening the restoration chain from quality seed to successful landscape establishment.
We support quality seed collection, handling and availability, strengthen nursery capacity to produce healthy seedlings, share practical propagation and restoration knowledge, encourage research and innovation, build partnerships across the restoration community, and support the transition from seedlings to established trees in suitable landscapes.
By strengthening each stage of the restoration process, MRI is building the capacity, knowledge and partnerships needed to restore Mpingo sustainably across Kenya.
Our goal is not simply to plant more trees, but to restore a species whose ecological, cultural and economic value deserves to endure for generations. Through collaboration with communities, researchers, forestry institutions, restoration practitioners and other stakeholders, MRI seeks to ensure that Mpingo restoration is informed by science, grounded in local knowledge, and connected to real opportunities for conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
We also seek to strengthen the long-term stewardship of Mpingo by promoting responsible management, monitoring restoration outcomes and generating practical evidence that can guide future restoration efforts. By connecting restoration with knowledge, enterprise and community participation, MRI is working to create landscapes where Mpingo can regenerate, grow and provide lasting ecological and economic benefits.
